TIPS Interns
TIPS offers internships to qualified people to gain professional experience in the economic policy challenges and responses in South Africa and the continent.
Candidates should have the following:
- A Masters degree in Economics (or be in the process of completing one).
- A professional or study background on themes related TIPS's focus areas. Specifically, prior research pertaining to technology and innovation, manufacturing value chains, natural resources and/or network infrastructure would be an advantage.
Applicants should also meet the following requirements:
- A sound knowledge of Excel and a proven ability to handle a data analysis package.
- Proven writing and presentation skills, with excellent command of written and spoken English.
- Proven ability to work with others as well as independently and to adhere strictly to deadlines.

- Position Multimedia Intern
Thobani Khumalo is a Multimedia Intern at TIPS. He is a photographer, motion picture creator, and researcher who was previously affiliated with the Contemporary Archive Project, ACCORD, HEARD, Statistics South Africa, and the Institute for Economic Justice. His images explore themes of water apartheid, gender, and geopolitics, and they have been exhibited in physical spaces and published in books and magazines. He graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, obtaining an honours degree in Media and Cultural Studies and a Master's in Development Studies. - Position Finance Intern
Siphesihle Banda joined TIPS in October 2025 as a Finance Intern. She holds a National Diploma in accounting from the University of Johannesburg. Siphesihle is a driven and collaborative individual who looks forward to developing her skills while contributing to the organisation’s operational excellence.
- Position Research Intern
Tshepo Molokoane holds a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Cape Town, where his dissertation focused on trade liberalisation and wage inequality in South Africa's manufacturing sector. Before joining TIPS, he worked as a research assistant at the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) and the Labour Research Service, contributing to research on labour markets, economic analysis and economic development.

Sebenzile Hlatshwayo is a Master of Commerce student in Economics at the University of Zululand. She is actively engaging in the academic space and has presented her research at platforms such as the Economic Society of South Africa (ESSA), the UKZN Macroeconomic Research Unit, and the Mbali International Conference. She has participated in Economic Research Southern Africa (ERSA) workshops and ERSA winter schools. Her research focus areas include climate change, sustainable development growth, and macroeconomic uncertainty. She also showcased her analytical prowess in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Investment research competition, earning a Certificate of outstanding research
